Tughans, Northern Ireland’s largest commercial law firm, has recently launched an innovative service for local football talent bound for professional football academies in the UK.

The Sports Law service provided by Tughans will involve reviewing players’ academy contracts and advising both the player and their parents on each of the contractual terms at no cost to the player.  If necessary, the firm will also negotiate on the player’s behalf to ensure that they receive the best possible deal for their own particular circumstances. The service is being pioneered by two of the firm’s associate solicitors and FA Registered Lawyers, John Turley and Gareth McCay, who were both promising young footballers having represented Northern Ireland at youth level.

Commenting on the new service, John Turley said ‘There are excellent coaches throughout Northern Ireland providing young players with the best advice they can get on the pitch. However, when players or their parents are dealing with UK based professional clubs there is little guidance available on the process and that is where we can step in. Tughans can provide a professional service where parents can be assured that their son’s interests are being protected at all times. Entrusting your son to a club in another country at the age of 16 is a big decision. Both Gareth and I have had involvement with English clubs as youth players so we understand the concerns of both the players and their parents. We are not connected with any club or agent and as solicitors we have a duty to act in our client’s best interest at all times. This is exactly where our strength lies.’
